Security and Defence Forum

Centres of Expertise

The Security and Defence Forum is a National Defence grant program with a mandate to develop and support a domestic competence and national interest in defence issues of current and future relevance to Canada.

The Security and Defence Forum currently funds twelve Centres of Expertise and one Chair of Defence Management Studies at universities across Canada.Through the Centres, in addition to the Chair of Defence Management Studies, more than 100 faculty members are working with almost 200 research fellows in the SDF community. Taken together with the number of employees and students affiliated with the Centres, the Forum’s academic population includes more than 700 active members.

The Centres of Expertise are representative, varied in their interests, and diverse in their strengths. With their annual grants, they are able to pursue research, introduce or expand courses for students, and organize outreach projects to enhance public awareness. The Centres are selected every five years, on the advice of the independent Selection Committee.

The Centre directors, along with the Chair of Defence Management Studies, come together annually at the SDF Business Committee meeting in Ottawa to discuss the state of the SDF community and ways to further advance the objectives of the Forum.
