  2. WRITS HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON 30 APR 17 CALLING FOR A PROVINCIAL GENERAL ELECTION IN NOVA SCOTIA WITH ELECTION DAY ON 30 MAY 17
  3. MEMBERS OF THE CANADIAN ARMED FORCES (CAF) AND THEIR DEPENDANTS VOTE PURSUANT TO ORDINARY CIVILIAN VOTING RULES. IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ELECTION ACT OF NOVA SCOTIA, QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED OF A CIVILIAN VOTER ARE THAT THE PERSON MUST:
    1. BE 18 YEARS OF AGE ON OR BEFORE ORDINARY POLLING DAY,
    2. BE A CANADIAN CITIZEN ON OR BEFORE ORDINARY POLLING DAY, AND
    3. HAVE BEEN ORDINARILY RESIDENT IN THE PROVINCE FOR SIX MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DAY OF THE WRIT, I.E. SINCE 30 OCT 16
  4. FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING A PERSON S PLACE OF RESIDENCE, SECTION 40 OF THE NOVA SCOTIA ELECTIONS ACT STATES THAT A PERSON RESIDES IN THE PLACE WHERE THE PERSON LIVES AND TO WHICH, WHENEVER ABSENT, THE PERSON INTENDS TO RETURN.  A MEMBER RESIDING ONBOARD SHIP WOULD BE ORDINARILY RESIDENT IN THE ELECTORAL DISTRICT IN WHICH THE SHIP IS BERTHED, E.G. HMC DOCKYARD, HALIFAX - NEEDHAM ELECTORAL DISTRICT, PROVIDED THE MEMBER HAS NO OTHER ORDINARY RESIDENCE IN NOVA SCOTIA
  5. VOTER INFORMATION CARDS, WHICH CONFIRM THAT A PERSON S NAME IS ON THE NOVA SCOTIA LIST OF ELECTORS, HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED BY ELECTIONS NOVA SCOTIA. IF A PERSON HAS NOT RECEIVED THE VOTER INFORMATION CARD BY 19 MAY 17, THE PERSON SHOULD CALL THE ELECTION CALL CENTRE AT 1-800-565-1504 OR FOR HALIFAX METRO AREA AT 902-424-8584. IF THE PERSON S NAME IS NOT ON THE LIST OF ELECTORS, AN APPLICATION MUST BE MADE TO THE RETURNING OFFICE OF THE PERSON S ELECTORAL DISTRICT. IDENTIFICATION, WHICH SHOWS THE PERSON S IDENTITY AND RESIDENCE, IS REQUIRED. AN ELECTOR S NAME CAN BE ADDED TO THE LIST FROM 30 APR TO 30 MAY AND ALSO ON ELECTION DAY, 30 MAY 17
  6. A MEMBER MAY VOTE IN PERSON AT RETURNING OFFICE CONTINUOUS POLLS FROM 09:00 TO 18:00 HRS FROM 30 APR TO 30 MAY (CLOSED SUNDAYS), OR AT ADVANCE POLLS FROM 10:00 TO 20:00 HRS ON 20 TO 27 MAY 17
  7. ON ELECTION DAY, 30 MAY 17, ELECTORS MAY VOTE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE ELECTORAL DISTRICT FROM 08:00 TO 20:00 HRS
  8. MEMBERS WHO EXPECT TO BE UNABLE TO VOTE ON THE DAYS SET FOR SPECIAL, ADVANCE OR ORDINARY POLLING MAY VOTE BY WRITE-IN BALLOT. THE MEMBER MUST MAKE AN APPLICATION TO THE RETURNING OFFICE OF THE MEMBER S ELECTORAL DISTRICT FOR A WRITE-IN BALLOT. THE APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE A PHOTOCOPY OF A DOCUMENT OR DOCUMENTS IDENTIFYING THE MEMBER AND HIS OR HER RESIDENCE. PROOF CAN BE A COPY OF ONE DOCUMENT WITH THE MEMBER S NAME, ADDRESS AND SIGNATURE OR COPIES OF TWO PIECES OF IDENTIFICATION, ONE WITH THE MEMBER S NAME AND THE OTHER WITH THE MEMBER S NAME AND SIGNATURE. THE APPLICATION FORM FOR A WRITE-IN BALLOT IS AVAILABLE FROM ANY RETURNING OFFICE OF ELECTIONS NOVA SCOTIA AND IS ALSO POSTED ON THE ELECTIONS NOVA SCOTIA WEBSITE. WHEN THE MEMBER SUBMITS THE COMPLETED APPLICATION FORM AND A COPY OF IDENTIFICATION DOCUMENTS TO THE RETURNING OFFICE FOR THE MEMBER S ELECTORAL DISTRICT, THE RETURNING OFFICER WILL SEND TO THE MEMBER A WRITE-IN BALLOT KIT WITH INSTRUCTIONS. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH MEMBER TO ENSURE THAT THEIR WRITE-IN BALLOT REACHES THE RETURNING OFFICER OF THE MEMBER S ELECTORAL DISTRICT BY 20:00 HRS ADT ON 30 MAY 17

  11. SECTION 41 OF THE NOVA SCOTIA ELECTIONS ACT - MEMBER OF THE CANADIAN FORCES AND ABSENCE FROM PROVINCE - STATES THAT:
    1. A MEMBER OF CANADIAN ARMED FORCES MEANS:
      1. A MEMBER OF THE REGULAR FORCE OR A SPECIAL FORCE OF THE CAF
      2. A MEMBER OF THE RESERVE FORCE OF THE CAF WHO IS ON FULL-TIME TRAINING OR SERVICE OR ON ACTIVE SERVICE OR
      3. A PERSON WHO IS EMPLOYED OUTSIDE CANADA BY THE CAF AS A TEACHER IN, OR AS A MEMBER OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT STAFF FOR, A CANADIAN ARMED FORCES SCHOOL.
    2. NOTWITHSTANDING SUBSECTION 38(1), A PERSON WHO HAS LEFT THE PROVINCE AND INTENDS TO RETURN AND RESIDE IN THE PROVINCE IS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE IN AN ELECTION IF THE PERSON IS A CANADIAN CITIZEN WHO:
      1. WILL BE EIGHTEEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER ON ELECTION DAY
      2. IS ABSENT FROM THE PROVINCE ON ELECTION DAY
        1. WHILE SERVING AS A MEMBER OF CANADIAN ARMED FORCES
        2. WHILE ENGAGED IN THE SERVICE OF THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA OR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE PROVINCE
        3. WHILE ATTENDING AN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION
        4. WHILE ENGAGED AS AN EMPLOYEE OF AN INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF WHICH CANADA IS A MEMBER, OR
        5. BECAUSE THE PERSON HAS LEFT THE PROVINCE AND INTENDS TO RETURN AND IS LIVING WITH A PERSON REFERRED TO IN ANY OF SUBCLAUSES (I) TO (IV), AND
      3. IMMEDIATELY BEFORE LEAVING THE PROVINCE IN ANY OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES DESCRIBED IN CLAUSE (B)
        1. HAD RESIDED IN THE PROVINCE FOR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS, AND
        2. RESIDED IN THE ELECTORAL DISTRICT IN WHICH THE ELECTION IS BEING HELD
  12. PROVINCIAL LEGISLATION DOES NOT PROHIBIT THE SALE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES ON POLLING DAY IN NOVA SCOTIA. ACCORDINGLY, THE SALE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IN MESSES, CANTEENS AND OTHER INSTITUTES IS NOT PROHIBITED ON CIVILIAN POLLING DAY
  13. POLITICAL ACTIVITIES ON DEFENCE ESTABLISHMENTS AND PERSONAL POLITICAL ACTIVITIES OF MEMBERS OF THE CAF ARE GOVERNED BY QR AND O 19.44 AND SECTION 3 OF REF A. POLITICAL ADVERTISING IN SERVICE NEWSPAPERS IS PROHIBITED. REF A CAN BE VIEWED AT THE JAG WEBSITE
