Policy Officer Recruitment Programme
The Policy Officer Recruitment Programme - or PORP - is a three-year programme created to recruit, develop, and train talented individuals from entry to working-level in the Policy Group at the Department of National Defence.
Through the PORP, participants are familiarized with the unique characteristics of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces. The PORP is designed to provide participants with the experience, knowledge and competencies required to emerge as well-rounded and effective defence policy officers.
The programme has a track record of success. Since its inception in 1987, the PORP has recruited more than 200 individuals. Many of our former recruits are now senior policy officers or executives across DND or elsewhere in the federal government.

Who Are We Looking For?
The Department of National Defence is looking for individuals who want to make a difference and pursue rewarding careers as defence policy officers.
Ideal candidates will:
- Have an interest in national and international defence and security issues;
- Demonstrate strong analytical and writing abilities;
- Have the ability to articulate sound policy advice both orally and in writing;
- Be team players; and,
- Have the ability to handle tight deadlines and, at times, significant pressure.
