National Day of Honour

The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) conducted operations in Afghanistan for more than 12 years in a number of different roles involving air, land and sea assets.

Since the beginning of the mission, more than 40,000 CAF members deployed to Afghanistan, many more than once, making the military engagement the largest deployment of CAF personnel since the Second World War.

On May 9, 2014, Canadians were invited to take part in the National Day of Honour. The Government of Canada set aside this day to mark the end of our country’s military mission in Afghanistan. A national ceremony on Parliament Hill paid tribute to the fallen, the sacrifices of the wounded, and the special burden borne by families. We will continue to honour them and the many civilians who also provided support throughout the mission.
