Canadian Armed Forces Surgeon General on Bell Let’s Talk 2018

Video / January 31, 2018

As a doctor, I know it can be difficult for people suffering with mental health issues to decide to come for care, and once in care some people struggle to complete the treatment.

They may be worried about how others will think of them, particularly colleagues at work. Also, people may feel that they are letting down their team if they are on sick leave or cannot do all their duties.

We can all make a huge difference. Being kind and understanding with those who are struggling can actually help speed their recovery. Choosing the right language can help make for a stigma free environment; an environment where we feel we can ask for help without being judged; an environment in which we can talk about mental health issues as easily as talking about going to the dentist.
