Mission
Canadian Forces Recruiting Group’s mission is twofold:

  • to support the operational capability of the Canadian Forces by recruiting (attracting, processing, selecting and enrolling) Canadian citizens to join the Regular Force; and
  • to process the requests of Canadian citizens who wish to join the Primary Reserve or the Cadet Instructors Cadre.

Organisation and Responsibilities
Headquartered at Canadian Forces Base Borden, near Barrie, Ontario, Canadian Forces Recruiting Group operates ten recruiting centres and 29 detachments across Canada (a total of 39 recruiting offices). Canadian Forces Recruiting Group carries out its duties with the leadership and efforts of about 760 people, and over the past four years has met the demand of recruiting more than 12,000 people annually into full- and part-time employment.

In addition to recruiting new Canadian Forces members, Canadian Forces Recruiting Group is responsible for the performance standards for all of its recruiting processes, the coordination and conduct of attracting, processing, selecting and enrolling recruits and officer candidates to meet the Canadian Forces’ operational requirements.

Our Personnel
The Canadian Forces Recruiting Group organisation employs members from most military occupations. The experience and knowledge of the Canadian Forces that are offered by these members are crucial in attracting high quality candidates for all military occupations. Canadian Forces Recruiting Group personnel obtain specialised training by means of various recruiting courses and through comprehensive on-the-job training.

The Numbers
The Regular Force intake between 2002 and 2005 averaged approximately 4,300 people annually; however, the Force Expansion has resulted in an increased Strategic Intake Plan targets to approximately 8,000 annually. To achieve these numbers, Canadian Forces Recruiting Group expects to process approximately 20,000 applicants.

The Way Ahead: Positioning the Canadian Forces as an “Employer of Choice”
In hiring as many as 12,000 – 14,000 full- and part-time people each year, the Canadian Forces is one of the largest recruiting force in Canada. To attract highly qualified individuals, either already in or newly entering the workforce, Canadian Forces Recruiting Group continues to implement a wide variety of initiatives to position employment with the Canadian Forces as the first choice for young Canadians looking to make a difference in the world.

These initiatives include:

  • E-recruiting - an interactive and real-time tool that allows those aspiring to a Canadian Forces career to initiate their applications on-line, and then track the status of their applications over the Internet;
  • Start-up of a National Recruiting Contact Centre in North Bay to respond to e-mail queries and send information packages freeing recruiters to focus on in-person contacts and attractions activities;
  • Procedures for processing applications have been significantly streamlined;
  • Priority processing for applications matching intake requirements;
  • Regular Force applicant physical fitness test shifted from pre-enrolment, where it was used to screen-out candidates, to a progressive post-enrolment approach that promotes physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle;
  • On-site selection: selection authority for most of the military occupations decentralized to recruiting centres meaning less delay before offers of employment;
  • The provision of no-obligation aptitude testing at job fairs and other attraction events;
  • Improvement in the process of transferring from one component of the Canadian Forces to another;
  • Development of a distinctive and memorable brand image - a promotional and marketing tool that reflects the Canadian Forces' ethos, behaviour and culture - and incorporation of that brand image into vast array of recruiting promotional materials;
  • Release of a national ad campaign using the distinctive brand image; and
  • Redesigned website using latest multi-media technology and incorporating the distinctive brand image.
