Statement / July 1, 2017

As we prepare to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary, I want you to take a moment to reflect on what this day represents for you as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces.

Since Confederation, thousands of soldiers, sailors and aviators have made the ultimate sacrifice so that Canadians can thrive in a country that values freedom, equality, law and order, diversity and peace. From the Boer War to Afghanistan, many brave people have given their lives in some of the most intense conflicts in history, and I encourage you to respect and honour their legacies.

Today, we continue to serve Canada proudly both at home and abroad, as a professional military full of talented and dedicated people. As you take some well-deserved time off to spend with your families and friends in celebration of this historical occasion, do so knowing that Canadians are extremely proud of you for the work you do and for the sacrifices you and your families have made over the course of time.

For those of you who continue to stand on guard during this weekend of celebrations, thank you.

We are truly fortunate to serve this wonderful country—remember that everything you do is in service to Canada and the values for which we stand. You are part of a team that helps makes Canada one of the best countries in the world and I am grateful for the professionalism and excellence you show on a daily basis.

Happy Canada Day!

Jonathan H. Vance
General
Chief of the Defence Staff
