International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

Video / August 9, 2017

August 9th is the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

In Canada, more than 1.4 million people identify themselves as Indigenous. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people have helped to shape our culture and history.

At the Department of National Defence, we know that 12 000 Indigenous Canadians served this country in the First World War, the Second World War, and peace support missions, with more than 500 giving their lives for Canada. Indigenous Canadians continue to defend our values of peace, freedom, and democracy in operations overseas. They deserve our recognition and our thanks.

Working together, on this day and every day, we will continue to build a stronger relationship with Canada’s Indigenous people.
