Message from the CDS on the Investiture of the Commander in Chief of Canada

Statement / October 3, 2017

Yesterday, I was honoured to attend the investiture of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette as Governor General and Commander in Chief of Canada. I had the chance to offer her my congratulations on behalf of the men and women she will now command as the representative of our Sovereign.

Her Excellency’s distinguished history as a scientist, an educator, and an astronaut are clear. What is less well known is that this is not her first experience with the CAF.

As part of her astronaut training, Her Excellency conducted pilot training on the CT-114 Tutor at 15 Wing Moose Jaw in February 1996. She obtained her military instrument rating in 1997, and has logged more than 1,300 hours of flight time. She will be presented her wings by the Commander RCAF, which she looks forward to wearing proudly.

Her Excellency has asked to visit members of Her Majesty’s Canadian Armed Forces who are deployed overseas; I know you will enjoy meeting her. In the interim, I would ask you to join me in welcoming our new Commander in Chief, and wishing her all the best as she assumes her new duties.

JH Vance
Chief of the Defence Staff
