Minister MacKay Announces New Canadian Forces Armoury in New Glasgow

News Release / July 10, 2012 / Project number: NR-12.145

NEW GLASGOW, N.S. – The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, today announced plans to construct a new armoury to be located in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. This new building will be used by A Company 1 Nova Scotia Highlanders for training and equipment maintenance, helping to maintain the skills of its infantry personnel that are necessary to support domestic and international operations.

“Members of the Nova Scotia Highlanders are a cornerstone of the community here in New Glasgow and have been active in Nova Scotia for over 140 years,” said Minister MacKay. “This new armoury will grant them the infrastructure that reflects the important role they play here and their rich history of serving this nation and the Canadian people.”

This new facility will be a modern, purpose-built building that will allow personnel to train more efficiently and effectively. The project will include site preparation, construction of the building complex, vehicle parking, and utilities, as well as landscaping.

This project is currently in its design phase. Once this phase is completed, the project will be assessed prior to the start of construction and costs will then be solidified. The Government of Canada will conduct open, fair, and transparent competition processes in order to award the contracts associated with this project.

This new building will replace the existing facility which was built in the 1940s, purchased by Department of National Defence in the 1960s, and has since undergone several renovations. Due to its age and the lack of sufficient office space, adequate classroom facilities, proper work areas and storage space, the facility is no longer suitable for the Canadian Forces’ training needs.

In line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, there is a need to update and replace dated defence infrastructure to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
