Minister MacKay Announces New Area Headquarters at CFB Edmonton

Backgrounder / March 23, 2012 / Project number: BG 12.012

Constructing new defence infrastructure is in line with the Canada First Defence Strategy, which sets a detailed road map for the modernization of the Canadian Forces.  New infrastructure will replace dated defence infrastructure and support a first-class, modern military that is ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century.

Land Force Western Area Headquarters

This project involves construction of an 8159 m2 building to house the Land Force Western Area Headquarters, the Joint Task Force West Headquarters and the 1 Area Support Group Headquarters at Canadian Forces Base/Area Support Unit (CFB/ASU) Edmonton. The new facility will be located at the Steele Barracks of CFB/ASU Edmonton and will meet all of the operational requirements of these organizations, allowing them to command the western region of Canada more efficiently.

Land Force Western Area Headquarters is one of four area commands of the Canadian Army and is mandated to command regular and reserve army forces in Western Canada. Joint Task Force West Headquarters commands domestic operations to provide military assistance to civil authorities in any emergency situation in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. 1 Area Support Group is a formation of Land Force Western Area, and is mandated to support both the Land Force Western Area Headquarters and the Joint Task Force West Headquarters.

Currently, Land Force Western Area Headquarters and Joint Task Force West Headquarters are housed in an elementary school building located on the Griesbach Barracks, 12 km away from CFB/ASU Edmonton. This building was included in the sale of the Griesbach Barracks to Canada Lands Company CLC Limited in 2003 and DND has been a tenant in this building since then. The move of these units to CFB/ASU Edmonton will be the final component of the Griesbach closure. Meanwhile, 1 Area Support Group Headquarters is housed in a 60 year old building at CFB/ASU Edmonton. When 1 Area Support Group Headquarters is relocated to the new facility, this vacated space will undergo minor renovations and be used to consolidate other Base Headquarters units back into the facility.

Overall project value (including taxes): approximately $54 million.
