News Release / July 3, 2001 / Project number: NR-00.01.054

Bagotville, Quebec - An infrastructure investment for (CFB) Batgotville that could reach $750,000 was announced today by the Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National Defence, in the presence of Mr. André Harvey, Member of Parliament for Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. The new facilities will be for the Canadian Cadet Movement.

"The Cadet program has been a success story for many years now, and remains a priority for the Government and the Canadian Forces," said Minister Eggleton. "Defence is a partner in the Youth Employment Strategy and is the largest employer of youth in the federal government. In developing a solid foundation of citizenship, the Canadian Cadet Movement helps young people make a valuable contribution to their community and their country."

The investment announced today will pay for the construction of a wash-house with showers, toilets and laundry facilities, and cement pads for pitching about ten tents. The new facilities will improve quality of life in the camp, which currently lacks space. Requests for proposals are expected in the fall of 2001.

By 2002, the 750 or so Air Cadets who go to summer camp each year at Bagotville will have more modern, spacious facilities. Each summer, 28 camps across Canada attract about 23,000 Cadets. During the school year, more than 55,000 young Canadians are involved in activities organized by 1,140 Cadet Corps.

"I welcome with pleasure the announcement of an investment at CFB Bagotville," said Mr. André Harvey. "These new facilities will benefit CFB Bagotville as well as the Cadets."

This project is funded by a Canada-wide program for improving the facilities at Cadet summer camps.
