Exercise PRECISE RESPONSE

10-28 July

Suffield, Alberta

Exercise PRECISE RESPONSE is an annual NATO CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense) exercise – almost 420 CBRN specialist from 11 countries are expected to participate in this year’s exercise. During those three weeks, participants will have the opportunity to test their skills and improve interoperability in a realistic CBRN environment.

Ukraine

The Royal Canadian Navy will deploy a contingent of 14 personnel comprised of divers and support staff from Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic and staff officers from Maritime Forces Atlantic to support SEA BREEZE 2017 (SB17), a United States Navy, Ukraine Navy-led, multi-national training event in Ukraine from 10 to 21 July. SB17 will train and exercise partners in Maritime Operations Centre operations, Information Sharing and Maritime Domain Awareness while enhancing interoperability and mutual understanding amongst maritime security partners in the Black Sea.

Exercise SPARTIATE EQUATORIALE will include 35 to 40 members from the 3rd Battalion Royal 22e Régiment who will participate in jungle training alongside the French military in French Guyana from May 6 to 28 2017.

Exercise BORDER SENTINEL

HMCS Hunter will host and lead a small boats training to achieve maximum operational readiness and the ability to support and respond to Royal Canadian Navy mission priorities and to gain a comprehensive understanding of a Naval Reserve support role to domestic operations. They will train with other government departments such as Windsor Port Authority, Windsor Police, OPP, RCMP, Canadian and American Coast guard, Lasalle Fire, and Homeland Security.

3000 Canadian Army soldiers from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group will conduct live fire training up to and including Level 5 Battle Task Standards. More than 150 members of 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, from Edmonton, Alberta, participate in Exercise SPECTRAL RAM. This is the Canadian Army’s contribution to the U.S. Army’s Exercise WARFIGHTER, a computer-assisted training event conducted at the Corps and Division level. The aim is to test readiness, responsiveness, and leadership skills in a variety of scenarios that simulate full-spectrum operations.

Exercise AQIKGIK 2017 will be held for the first time in Northern Quebec and on the Lower North Shore. During this Exercise, a snowmobile expedition, consisting of six teams of six Canadian Rangers each, will visit the 35 communities where Ranger and/or Junior Ranger patrols are located. During the course of Exercise AQIKGIK, the participants will travel 3,690 kilometres on snowmobile. More than 120 members of 2 CRPG (100 Canadian Rangers and 20 executives and instructors) will be involved in this exercise.

Exercise PALADIN RESPONSE

More than 200 soldiers from 39 Combat Engineer Regiment will practice bridge and raft design and construction during Exercise PALADIN RESPONSE at Area Support Unit Chilliwack, British Columbia. This exercise will offer members of the regiment the opportunity to operate as engineers with other combat arms.

Canadian Patrol Concentration 2016

The Canadian Patrol Concentration is a physically and mentally demanding set of challenges designed to test small patrols from across the Canadian Army’s four divisions. Approximately 500 members will take part or support the training.

A company of Canadian infantry and headquarters staff (approximately 100) will take part in Ex CROIX DU SUD, a biennial joint and combined field training opportunity. The main objectives are to train and prepare a multinational Joint headquarters and staff to conduct a broad spectrum of multinational operations, including amphibious operations. The exercise aims to enhance interoperability between foreign forces and French Pacific forces, and to enhance operational readiness level and multinational cooperation through valuable and challenging training opportunities.

Members of 4 Engineer Support Regiment will practice a wide range of military engineering skills, such as bridge-building, during a three-week-long exercise. Engineers will also practice their construction techniques in support of a local Habitat for Humanity project.

Exercise SPARTAN WARRIOR 16

SPARTAN WARRIOR 16 is a Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) led-training opportunity that begins off the east coast of Canada in late October. The training will bring together participants from Canada, the United States and Spain and provides participants with an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and combat effectiveness across the full spectrum of maritime operations. Participants will transit down the eastern seaboard of the US and will end their training in the Caribbean Sea in mid-November. The Canadian Armed Forces is committed to enhancing and promoting interoperability with partner countries.

Exercise STEELE LEOPARDO is an exchange between members of the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps and the Brazilian Army Armoured Corps to exchange best practices among Leopard tank crews.

Over 140 members from the 2nd Canadian Division, the 5th Service Battalion, the 5th Field Ambulance and the 2nd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment, to take part in a national exercise on chemical and biological defence. Participants have the opportunity to train with the newest CAF capability: a decontamination system that cleans simultaneously personnel, equipment and vehicles.

Naval Reserve members from across Atlantic Canada will take part in a Regional Small Boat Exercise to practice operations using craft such as Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats.

Exercise WOLF FORCE will involve 400 members of 33 Canadian Brigade Group conducting training at both headquarters and company/platoon levels. Live-fire readiness training and command and control capabilities will be tested during the exercise.

VIGILANT SHIELD

This annual exercise enables crucial training opportunities for both Canadian and American military personnel. The exercise, which involves several Canadian and U.S. aircraft and assets, seeks to improve interoperability and demonstrates NORAD’s ability to defend North America.

Exercise TOXIC TRIP 16

TOXIC TRIP is an annual NATO-led, scenario-driven exercise (Air Force oriented) on CBRN defense. It aims to enhance our Allies’ interoperability of CBRN procedures and equipment. In 2016, a team of thirteen Canadians attended the exercise showcasing, for the second consecutive year, the radiation portal monitors. In 2017, Canada will participate with a larger team and a new capability, the CBRN decontamination system.

CLEAR HORIZON is a mine counter-measures exercise hosted by the Republic of Korea. Approximately 16 members from the Royal Canadian Navy’s explosive ordnance disposal community will take part alongside naval members from six other countries. The training takes place off Busan, Republic of Korea and the surrounding waters.

Great Lakes Deployment 2016

Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships Goose Bay and Kingston will conduct exercises throughout the St. Lawrence Seaway, while making stops at various cities during their deployment from 24 June to 11 July. Canadians will have a chance to visit the ships and meet members of the Royal Canadian Navy. Between stops, the ship’s crew will conduct exercises with members of the Naval Reserve of the Royal Canadian Navy.

Norwegian Sea

The Royal Canadian Navy is taking part in a NATO anti-submarine warfare exercise in the Norwegian Sea. HMCS Windsor joins over 3,000 sailors and air personnel from eight allied nations during the 10-day exercise.

This exercise prepares aircrew and support personnel for the rigors of combined and joint operations in the modern aerial battlespace. In recent years, Exercise MAPLE FLAG has grown to include air and land elements of Canadian, allied and partner nations, fusing with elements of concurrent exercises, such as Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE.

Over 240 Army Reservists from 41 Canadian Brigade Group will take part in a South Dakota Army National Guard field training exercise that focuses on the rebuilding stage of an operation and ties into domestic operations through the conduct of real-life humanitarian support missions in the form of various engineering projects. Canadian soldiers will join almost 4 000 military personnel from Denmark, Singapore, Suriname, the United Kingdom and the United States during the exercise.

This exercise will consist of a water jump by the parachute company of 3rd Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment onto the Lac St-Joseph drop zone. The purpose of this exercise is to upgrade and practice water jump procedures.

MAPLE RESOLVE

Canadian Army soldiers from 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group, with support from the Royal Canadian Air Force, will take part in Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE. The exercise sets the stage for soldiers to sharpen their skills within a realistic, complex and challenging operating environment. The end-goal of the exercise is to test and validate the readiness of participating units to deploy anywhere in the world, at any time. American Army and National Guard units will join the training, along with an infantry company from the British Army.

Reserve Members of 36 Canadian Brigade Group, 5th Canadian Division will take part in a number of exercises throughout Atlantic Canada as part of their annual readiness training.

TIGER Exercise

Members of 424 Squadron will conduct a Search and Rescue exercise involving a variety of land and water scenarios in cooperation with several emergency response groups including Civil Air Search and Rescue Association, Sauvetage et recherche aériens du Québec, and the Ontario Provincial Police. RCAF SAR units maintain a training curriculum that includes regular training events in different areas of Canada’s SAR regions to ensure crews are familiar with areas of operations and to exercise cooperation with SAR partners.

Naval Reserve Divisions from Eastern region will conduct a search and rescue exercise with the participation of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. During the exercise, naval reservists will conduct small boat operations and diving operations.

Approximately 25 members of 3rd Battalion, Royal 22e Regiment will conduct parachute jumps from helicopters. Soldiers will also be exercising other airmobile operations in order to maintain their skills.

Members of 5e Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada will support the Royal Canadian Artillery School during a live-fire Battery Commander’s Course. In preparation to support this course, 5 RALC will conduct Exercise PIÈCES AGUERRIES from April 21 to May 6. The exercise will involve four M777 Howitzers as well as 81mm mortars. Approximately 100 vehicles will be used to transport 5 RALC to Gagetown in convoys.

Ex DETERMINED DRAGON is a CDS-directed Command Post exercise that permits Canadian Joint Operations Command headquarters, its formations, and its components to achieve an increased level of readiness. This year’s exercise will focus on defending North America, supporting the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) and the Canadian NORAD Region, and integrating cyber and space domains into operations. The exercise will be conducted in two phases:

Canadian Patrol Concentration 15 is designed to challenge the soldier at the basic proficiency level, specifically those skills found within Junior Leaders, Individual Battle Task Standards (IBTS) and Level 2 Battle Task Standards (BTS). IBTS/BTS are selected based on the requirement for physical stamina, mental fortitude and agility. The patrols will require a high degree of individual skills, teamwork, resiliency and a competitive spirit in order to successfully complete the concentration and accomplish the assigned tasks.

For the year of 2015-16, 2 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery will be sending E Battery to FORT DRUM as part of a SUE. While in FORT DRUM, E Battery will be paired up with 3-6 FA Battalion (3-6-FAR) to conduct many key artillery tasks. This multi-national training will continue to develop the interoperability and camaraderie between two different NATO allies.

Five ships from Canada’s Atlantic Fleet will participate in international exercises off the coasts of Canada, United States and Europe this fall. Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships Montréal, Halifax and Athabaskan with Maritime Helicopter Detachments from 12 Wing Shearwater will depart from Halifax to conduct Task Group Exercises along the eastern seaboard. The ships will then transit across the Atlantic to join exercise JOINT WARRIOR with the British Royal Navy and other allied navies. Later in the deployment Her Majesty’s Canadian Ships Goose Bay and Summerside will join the Task Group for Exercise TRIDENT JUNCTURE – the largest NATO maritime exercise Canada has participated in for approximately 20 years.

This 4 Canadian Division hosted exercise familiarizes senior government officials, industry leaders and influential Canadians in Ontario with the combat capabilities of 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group. The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School (RCACS), as part of the Combat Training Centre (CTC), will host Exercise WORTHINGTON CHALLENGE (EX WC 15) at 5th Canadian Division Support Base (5CDSB) Gagetown. EX WC 15 is a week-long exercise hosted by the RCACS designed to enhance unit focus on armoured fighting vehicle mounted direct-fire gunnery skills, crew skills, and individual soldier skills. Participants include crews from across the Canadian Army from 2, 3, 4, and 5 Divisions, as well as the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre (CADTC). In addition, a team from Denmark, the United States, and Germany may participate in the EX WC 15.
