Joint Task Force Atlantic (JTFA) is one of six regional joint task forces located across Canada to conduct continental operations by the Canadian Armed Forces.
JTFA has its headquarters at Her Majesty's Canadian Dockyard in Canadian Armed Forces Base Halifax.
Commander JTFA also commands Maritime Forces Atlantic, a formation of the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Halifax Search and Rescue Region.
Area of responsibility
JTFA is responsible for leading continental operations across Atlantic Canada, including Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, the regions contiguous waters, and its airspace. This area of responsibility comprises about one third of Canadas land mass and is home to nearly 2.5 million people.
The Halifax Search and Rescue Region, for which Commander JTFA is also responsible, comprises eastern Quebec, southern Baffin Island and the northwestern quadrant of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the four Atlantic provinces.
Command and tasking authority
Commander JTFA commands the Canadian Armed Forces response to any request for military intervention to provide emergency assistance or support in critical incidents throughout the JTFA area of responsibility. These requests come from Canadian Joint Operations Command's partners in operations, and from the provincial and territorial governments in the JTFA area of responsibility.
To form mission-appropriate task forces, Commander JTFA has the authority to task any and all resources held in the JTFA area of responsibility by the Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Army or the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Through JTFA, the Canadian Armed Forces maintains a continuous watch to generate comprehensive awareness of security and defence conditions in the Atlantic provinces and the Atlantic maritime and air approaches to Canada.
JTFA current operations include search-and-rescue missions and fisheries protection.
The most recent rapid-response operation by JTFA was Operation LAMA in September 2010, which brought a task force of more than 1,000 Regular and Reserve Force personnel to southeastern Newfoundland, where they provided flood relief in support of provincial authorities in about 80 isolated communities devastated by Hurricane Igor.
