Dress policy for personnel on strength of NDHQ and CFSU (O) is set by the Commandant CFSU (O) in consultation with the different stakeholders and the VCDS.
Para 1: Dress of the day; The standard of dress for military personnel on duty should be appropriate to the duties performed by the member. This standard may differ depending on operational requirement. As per reference, local commanders are responsible for the standard the dress of subordinates on any occasion, subject to overall command direction. Commanders who wish to apply a standard different to the one established in these orders shall advise the VCDS, through the Cmdt CFSU (O), of their intention.
- Officers and WO; unless otherwise directed in accordance with above paragraph, all officers and WO shall wear an appropriate order of service dress, (No 3a to 3c inclusive); and,
- Sgt and Below; all Sgts and below are authorized to wear No. 3 (service dress), including 3e (base dress). Naval PO2 and below are authorized to wear Naval Combat Dress (NCD), Army Sgts and below are authorized to wear field combat clothing (operational dress), and the Air Force Sgts and below are authorized to wear light weight combat clothing (LWCC); and,
Para 2: Dress To/From Work; Service personnel employed in the National Capital Region may wear civilian clothing to and from their place of residence. Wearing of civilian clothing during working hours on Fridays is authorized. Refer to sections 13-14 of this order for acceptable standard of dress when civilian clothing is worn on duty.
Para 10: Integrated Identification/Building Pass; Personnel shall wear the integrated Identification Card/Building Pass within an NDHQ occupied area where passes are required. Passes must be clearly visible at all times and the following criteria apply.
- Be worn on a chain, lanyard or clip.
- Retractable clip to secure pass may be authorized.
- Lanyards with proper safety breakaway device approved by the organization may be authorized. The colour should be sober and the lanyard shall be free of commercial logos and gaudy or bizarre design. Inscription on the lanyard should be restricted to approved unit identification (i.e. Army, Canada Com, CMP, CFSU (O), etc); lanyards bearing civilian logos are prohibited.
- Must be worn above the waist.
- Upon leaving the building, the pass must be put away and chain or lanyard shall not be visible.
CF Personnel - Appropriate Civilian Attire
Para 13: Dress and Personal Appearance – Servicemen Civilian Clothes. The wearing of civilian clothes by a serviceman on duty in the NCR shall be governed by the following:
- When authorized to wear civilian clothes, servicemen shall present a neat, lean and well groomed appearance; and
- The following apparel is appropriate for civilian wear: suit, sports jacket, and blazer, dress pants, turtleneck with blazer or sweater, sweater with shirt and tie, dress shoes to include oxfords. Loafers, and lace up shoes; as well, an open collar dress shirt or golf shirt may be worn in lieu of wearing a shirt and tie or turtleneck. Golf shirts must be in good taste, and are not to contain offensive language or advertise commercial products with the exception of bona-fide sports related logos on the pocket (i.e. Nike); and
- A serviceman (with the exception of designated social activities and sporting events) shall not wear the following items:
- sports clothes including: sweat shirts, T-shirts, sweat pants, spandex pants, cargo pants, shorts, running shoes, beach/sport sandals, and flip-flops, or
- denim clothing including: jeans, cargo pants, overalls, or
- earrings and body piercing.
Para 14: Dresses and Personal Appearance – Servicewomen Civilian Clothes. The wearing of civilian clothes by service women on duty in the NCR shall be governed by the following:
- When authorized to wear civilian clothes, service women shall present a neat, clean and well groomed appearance in her choice of clothing;
- The following apparel is appropriate for wear:
- dress, skirts, dress slacks, capris with sweater or blouse,
- dress blazer/jacket with co-ordinating slacks/skirt combination,
- in complement to the above standards, a golf style shirt may be worn providing it is in good taste, and it does not contain offensive language or logos on the pocket (i.e. Nike);
- dress shoes and dress sandals.
- A servicewomen (with the exception of designated social activities and sporting events) shall not wear the following items of apparel:
- sports clothes including: sweat shirts, T-shirts, sweat pants, spandex, rugby, dress shorts, shorts, mini skirt/dress (more 6” above the knee), and midriff baring tops; or
- denim clothing including: jeans, cargo pants, overalls; or
- running shoes, beach/sport sandals, and flip-flops; or
- jewellery of excessive appearance; or
- outfits with excessive décolleté.
