Gander Dental Detachment
Gander Dental Detachment Specific Information:
- 1 Dental Detachment is part of 9 Wing Gander.
The Detachment shares the building with MIR. The Dental Detachment provides
full-time patient care to 9 Wing Gander personnel and is also responsible
to provide support to personnel at CFS St. John’s NF. The Dental Detachment
personnel are required to conduct temporary duty to CFS St. John’s 8-10 times
per year for a two week period as determined by the Dental Detachment Commander.
- Presently the clinic consists of a 1- Capt Detachment
Commander, 1 -MCpl clinic coordinator and 1- Cpl dental assistant.

Hours of Operation:
Mon – Fri 0800 – 1630 hrs
Sick Parade:
Emergency dental care is provided between 0800-
0830 hrs on a first come first serve basis normally. Patients requiring urgent
care will be seen as required.
After Hours Emergency Procedure:
- All CFDS Dental Detachments provide 24 hour/7
days a week service. When in the Gander area and outside of regular working
hours dental service can be obtained by contacting the following:
- The commissionaires at 709-256-1703 extension
107 who will contact the duty dental person;
- Treatment provided by a civilian practitioner
outside the above guidelines is subject to the conditions outlined in CFAO
35-3.
Enrolment Procedure:
- Dental enrolment exams are done by appointment
by calling the dental clinic reception at local 494.
- This requirement is outlined in CFAO
35-2 and is in accordance with QR&O
35.03
Release Procedure:
- Release exams are mandatory and are done by
appointments by calling the dental clinic reception at local 494. Release
exams are required for Regular Force, Reserve Class C, for members completing
a period of flying duties and any other military member that were given an
examination to satisfy legal and forensic requirements upon release.
- IMPORTANT: There is no required condition of dental fitness upon release. Unfinished work will not
be completed beyond a member's effective date of release.
- An actual forensic release charting will be
done within the member's last 30 days of active service.
- Release guidelines are outlined in CFAO
35-2 and are in accordance with QR&O

Screening Procedure:
- Screening exams are provided to members by appointment
Mon – Fri. Screening exams are done for military members going out of country,
UN taskings or isolated areas where there are no dental facilities available.
- This requirement is outlined in CFAO
35-2 and is in accordance with QR&O

- Screening exams for dependants and other civilians
are not provided by the CFDS detachment. Such screenings must be performed
in accordance with CFAO
35-5
Annual (Phase-1) Exam Procedure:
- Annual exams are provided at 12, 18 or 24 month
intervals depending on the member's previous annual exam assessment.
- Annual exams are done by appointment. The purpose
of the exam to ensure the members are at a level of dental fitness in-garrison
that will allow for quick deployment. This exam determines if the member is
fit to carry out all military duties without loss of time or effectiveness
due to dental problems. During the appointment the medical history and x-rays
are updated. Members will be given other appointments at that time if required.
- All CF members are reminded that it is ultimately
the member's responsibility to ensure they obtain an annual exam.
- Commanders and superiors are reminded they have
a responsibility to ensure their personnel are deployable and dentally fit.
- All regular force members, reserve class "C",
and reserve class "B">180 days must receive an annual exam as
required in CFAO
35-2 and in accordance with QR&O
