As members of the Canadian Forces our lawyers deploy overseas with Canadian contingents to provide legal advice to commanders on international and domestic law. They deploy across Canada as part of Canadian Forces domestic operations to provide legal advice. They advise on operational legal issues at every level of headquarters.
They serve the military justice system as part of autonomous prosecution and defence organizations representing their clients at courts martial and appearing before the Court Martial Appeal Court. They represent the interests of the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Forces as members of Canadian delegations negotiating international treaties. They provide general legal advice and services to all levels of command at bases and headquarters across Canada and overseas. They represent Canadian interests at allied headquarters. They provide training on military law and military justice. They provide legal advice on military personnel and administrative issues.
While serving as part of the Office of the Department of National Defence/Canadian Forces Legal Adviser they fill a number of positions requiring military expertise and experience working in areas such as legislative drafting, pensions, claims and administrative law. Some eventually may be appointed military judges and move to serve in the independent Office of the Chief Military Judge.
