As its name implies, the Directorate of Law/Military Justice, Policy and Research (DLaw/MJP&R) is responsible for policy development in the area of military justice. To that end, DLaw/MJP&R is involved in the development of legislation, regulations and orders that pertain to the military justice system.

In addition to its research function, DLaw/MJP&R fulfills an advisory function. With a specific focus on the Code of Service Discipline and Criminal Law, DLaw/MJP&R provides opinions, develops reports and gives legal advice on issues related to military justice. As part of its advisory role, the DLaw/MJP&R assists in the development of publications and guides on the military justice system for use by members of the Canadian Forces.

DLaw/MJP&R also assists the Judge Advocate General in carrying out his military justice superintendence and review functions. As such, the directorate maintains data-bases, conducts surveys and produces reports on the Military Justice System. DLaw/MJP&R is responsible for the development of the Annual Report of the Judge Advocate General to the Minister of National Defence on the Administration of Military Justice in the Canadian Forces.
