Canada Command Legal Advisor :::  

The Canada Command Legal Advisor is responsible for the provision of legal advice to the Commander and staff at Canada Command (CANADA COM).

CANADA COM is responsible for the conduct of all domestic CF operations, including both routine and contingency, and is the national operational authority for the defence of Canada and North America. Canada COM commands six regional commands: North, Pacific, West, Central, East, and Atlantic.

The Regional commands are under the operational command of the Commander of Canada COM and are responsible for the conduct of all routine and contingency operations in their respective areas of responsibility in Canada. These operations include operations ranging from search and rescue, security support to law enforcement agencies for special events such as the Olympic games, to humanitarian assistance operations in support of emergency management authorities during natural disasters including floods and forest fires.

The CANADA COM Legal Advisor supports CANADA COM by advising on all aspects of military law that impact the conduct of domestic and defence of Canada and North America operations.

The support provided by the legal officers at CANADA COM ensures that this operational command is able to bring the best available military resources from across Canada to bear on a crisis or threat, wherever it occurs, nation-wide, in a relevant, responsive and effective way.

Specifically, the CANADA COM Legal Advisor is involved in the legal review of requests for the provision of military assistance from governmental and non-governmental organizations and provides legal advice during the planning and execution of exercises and operations within the CANADA COM areas of responsibility.

In addition to providing legal advice on the defence of Canada, legal advice has historically also addressed military support during natural disasters, humanitarian crises and international events taking place within Canada.

The CANADA COM Legal Advisor also provides advice on non-operational matters including military justice and administrative law when issues arise.
