Three Canadian soldiers killed
At approximately 9:10 a.m. local time (in Kandahar) December 30, Gunner Jonathan Dion, a member of 5th Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada, valcartier, Que., was killed when the armoured vehicle he was in struck a suspected improvised explosive device. Four other Canadian soldiers were also injured.

Prime Minister recognizes SAR crew
A harrowing rescue at sea off the coast of Newfoundland last May earned searchers and survivors alike special recognition from Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The Prime Minister visited a small church in Port De Grave, Newfoundland on December 1 to recognize everyone involved in the rescue of six crab fishermen—including the fishermen themselves—for what he called a textbook rescue.
Messages that warm the heart
