Privacy Notice

The Government of Canada and the Department of National Defence are committed to providing visitors with Web sites that respect their privacy. This page summarizes the privacy policy and practices on the Department of National Defence Web site.

The Department of National Defence Web site does not automatically gather any specific personal information from you, such as your name, phone number or e-mail address. We would only obtain this type of information if you supply it by sending it to us.

All personal information created, held or collected by the Department of National Defence is protected under the federal Privacy Act. This means that at any point of collection you will be informed of the purpose for which it is being collected and how to exercise your right of access to that information.

The Department of National Defence employs software programs to monitor network traffic, and to identify unauthorized attempts to upload or change information or otherwise cause damage. These programs are also used to gather anonymous information such as statistics to improve the functionality of our Web sites. These software programs receive and record the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that has contacted our Web site, the date and time of the visit and the pages visited. We make no attempt to link these addresses with the identity of individuals visiting our Web site unless an attempt to damage the Web site has been detected. The programs are never used to gather specific personal information such as your name, your phone number or your e-mail address.

The Department of National Defence occasionally uses "cookies" to improve the efficiency of it’s Web sites. A cookie is a file that may be placed on your hard drive without your knowledge by a Web site to track how our visitors use our sites, to determine sites previously visited or to facilitate the use of password-protected sites and secure portions of Web sites. The cookies we use are compiled into statistical information on traffic patterns and their use respects the provisions of the Privacy Act. They are never used to gather specific personal information such as your name, your phone number or your e-mail address. We never attempt to link the information gathered through the use of cookies to the identity of the visitor.

We use two types of cookies:

  • Session cookies – These are used as an integral part of the identification process for some of our Web sites and online applications. This is for security purposes to determine that you are who you say you are and to provide you with your confidential account information during an online session. No personal information is kept in session cookies and they are stored only in your browser’s temporary (cache) memory. When you log out of your session, the cookie is no longer valid and is discarded when you close your browser.
  • Persistent cookies – These are more permanent and can be re-read when you return to the site that placed them on your computer. The information in them is written onto your hard drive and remains there until the expiry date of the cookie. They are used to identify and provide personalized features (for example, to help us remember which official language you prefer) and for tracking traffic patterns to and from our site.

The Department of National Defence employs a fully automated Anti-Spam Filter to protect its employees and networks from spam. Incoming email messages that are flagged by the software as spam are deleted automatically by the technology without notification. The program is set to block email that is considered obvious spam because of its content (for example, pornographic, racist, get-rich-quick schemes, junk commercial solicitations) as determined by general industry best practice.

Information on individual visitors, gathered under the conditions described above, is used by the Department of National Defence employees who need to know the information in order to respond to your request or to ensure the security of this system. We only share the information you give us with another government department if your inquiry relates to that department. We do not use the information to create individual profiles, nor do we disclose this information to anyone outside the federal government.
