The Government of Canada is delivering on its "Canada First" commitment to strengthen Canada's multi-role, combat-capable defence force. The Department of National Defence is purchasing equipment and related support services for the Canadian Forces. This Government is doing procurement faster and fairly, getting the right equipment for the Canadian Forces, at the best price for Canadians, with the right benefits for Canadian industry. Strengthening the Canadian Forces by investing in these key capabilities is long overdue.
See Major Procurement Projects for further information.
The first priority of a robust and well-equipped Canadian Forces is to protect Canadians and defend Canadian sovereignty at home and abroad. To do this, they need the right tools and equipment to get the job done.
Not only does funding for new equipment benefit the Canadian Forces, it also benefits Canadians and Canadian industry. The Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) program is an applied requirement for all major defence procurements; every dollar the Government of Canada pays a contractor, the contractor must spend an equivalent amount inside Canada. IRBs are mandatory on all defence projects over $100 million, allowing the federal government to lever long-term industrial and regional development from defence investments. This ensures that no matter where defence equipment is from, the Canadian economy benefits from the Government’s investment.
The consistent, committed long-term funding outlined in the Canada First Defence Strategy will ensure that the Canadian Forces have the equipment needed to be a modern, flexible force, capable of defending Canada and Canadian interests well into the future.
Using the Canada First Defence Strategy as a roadmap, Canadian industry will be able to invest proactively and exploit opportunities for domestic and international spin-offs.
