The Government of Canada, through the Canada First Defence Strategy, has committed to provide stable and predictable funding to the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces in order to continue building a first-class military that is well-trained, well-equipped and ready to take on the challenges of the 21st century.

The Department of National Defence is committed to a procurement system that ensures the Canadian Armed Forces are equipped with a modern military that can protect and defend Canada well into the future. The consistent, committed, long-term funding outlined in the Canada First Defence Strategy ensures the military has the equipment needed to be a modern, flexible force capable of defending Canada, and Canadian interests.

The Industrial Regional Benefits policy further consults the defence and security industry to best determine the process, and maximize economic opportunities at home. Leveraging investments in military equipment to the benefit of industry and workers creates jobs, and ensures long-term prosperity for Canadians.

Please see Projects and Investments for more information about our equipment projects and the benefits to Canadian industry as a result of defence investments.

The Government of Canada has been clear about its commitment to provide the Canadian Forces with the robust, modern equipment they need to protect Canadians and Canadian interests in the 21st century.

The Department of National Defence continues to deliver on this commitment, introducing and replacing new capabilities for the Canadian Forces at a faster pace than ever before. The purchase of the CC-130J Hercules transport fleet – all of which were delivered ahead of schedule – is but one example of this.

Please visit the tabs below for further information about our equipment projects.

Halifax-class Modernization / Frigate Life Extension

Halifax-class Modernization / Frigate Life Extension

The Halifax-class frigates are currently undergoing a planned mid-life modernization and refit to ensure that they continue to operate effectively as the backbone of the Royal Canadian Navy fleet.

National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy

National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy

Through this strategy, Canada will replace the current surface fleets of the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard, which are reaching the end of their operational lives. First in line will be the Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) for the Royal Canadian Navy in the combat package. These will be followed by the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC). The Joint Support Ships (JSS) will be built for the Royal Canadian Navy under the non-combat work package.

Victoria-class Submarines

Victoria-class Submarines

Canada’s submarine fleet will reach steady state in 2013, which means Canada will have three of the four submarines available for operations. One submarine will be taking its turn in the rotation for an Extended Docking Work Period at all times.

Family of Land Combat Vehicles

Family of Land Combat Vehicles

As part of this initiative, the current fleet of Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) III will be upgraded and three new fleets of land combat vehicles will be acquired, including Close Combat Vehicles (CCV), Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles (TAPV), and the Force Mobility Enhancement (FME) vehicles.

Medium Support Vehicle System Project

Medium Support Vehicle System Project

This project is acquiring new medium-sized logistics trucks for the Canadian Forces to replace its current fleet of Logistics trucks. The project aims to procure Militarized Commercial Off-the-Shelf (MILCOTS) Vehicles, Standard Military Pattern (SMP) Vehicles, and Special Equipment Vehicle (SEV) Baseline Shelters.

Tank Replacement Project

Tank Replacement Project

The Tank Replacement Project will provide the Canadian Forces with both an urgent short-term and a long-term, sustainable replacement for its aging Leopard 1 C2 Main Battle Tank fleet.

CC-130J Hercules Tactical Airlift

CC-130J Hercules Tactical Airlift

This project successfully acquired a new fleet of 17 tactical transport aircraft, on budget and ahead-of-schedule, to replace the legacy E-model Hercules that were nearing the end of their operational life.

Next Generation Fighter Capability

This project, coordinated by the National Fighter Procurement Secretariat, is being implemented according to the Government's Seven-Point Plan. This plan will ensure that the Royal Canadian Air Force acquires the fighter aircraft it needs to complete the missions asked of it by the Government, and that Parliament and the Canadian public have confidence in the open and transparent acquisition process that will be used to replace the CF-18 fleet.

CC-115 Buffalo

Fixed-Wing Search and Rescue Aircraft Replacement Project

This project is acquiring a new fixed-wing search and rescue aircraft fleet that will give the Canadian Forces the equipment required to carry out critical, life-saving search and rescue missions.

Maritime Helicopter Project

Maritime Helicopter Project

The Maritime Helicopter Project is a program that involves the delivery of 28 state-of-the-art, combat-capable CH-148 Cyclone helicopters.

Medium-to-Heavy Lift Helicopter Project

Medium-to-Heavy Lift Helicopter Project

This project is acquiring a new fleet of 15 medium-to-heavy lift Chinook F-model helicopters to meet the Canadian Forces rotary-wing transport requirements.

This Government is doing procurement fairly, getting the right equipment for the Canadian Forces, at the best price for Canadians, with the right benefits for Canadian industry.

The Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) program is an applied requirement for defence projects over $100 million, which means that every dollar the Government of Canada pays a contractor, the contractor must spend an equivalent amount inside Canada.

IRBs allow the federal government to lever long-term industrial and regional development from defence investments. This ensures that no matter where defence equipment is from, the Canadian economy benefits from the Government's investment.

Please see the tables below for more information about some of the defence investments that have been announced since 2006.
